Abstract: This paper subverts the surface identity of Lilias Papagay as a spirit medium, through a thorough analysis of the image of A.S. Byatts novella “The Conjugial Angel”, the second part of her neoVictorian novel Angels and Insects, and points out that she is both a spirit medium and “counterspirit medium.” This paradoxical identity contributes greatly to the development of the plot as well as the highlight of the theme, and the change of her identity also shows Byatts perpetual care for womens lives.

摘要： 通过对A.S.拜厄特新维多利亚小说《天使与昆虫》第二部《婚约天使》中的人物莉莉娅斯·帕帕盖的形象分析，颠覆其表面灵媒的身份。她既是灵媒又是“反灵媒”，在情节的推动及主题的彰显方面发挥了重要作用，她身份的蜕变也体现出拜厄特对女性生命的一贯关怀。
