Abstract: In the second half of the 19th century, Hawaii entered the period of rampant leprosy. The colonial government took quarantine, confinement and other control measures, which contained into the spread of the disease to some extent. In this context, leprosy becomes a central image in Londons Hawaiian narratives, mirroring the correlation between the writer and national politics, and reflecting the authors complex and multidimensional standpoint: On the one hand, London boasts the effectiveness of the governments control of leprosy and highlights the Hawaiis natural resources to the national strategic significance in order to shift the civil concern from leprosy to land development and overseas immigration. On the other hand, London extols interracial marriage, revealing his yearning for racial integration and national identity. Londons discursive practice of consolidating the American domination in Hawaii in art and literature exposes a mismatch between the Hawaiian land and Americas nationalization, and his frontier consciousness and imperial stance are on full display.
