Abstract: Melvilles “Bartleby the Scrivener” is a short fiction with deep implications of modern ecology. The setting of the fiction, Wall Street, is a place with numerous high walls, where the working place is closed and depressive, and the nature of the work is mechanical and wearisome, thus presenting a picture of modern wasteland. Living in the world of walls on Wall Street as well as the spiritual walls created by himself, Bartleby has become a “lost lamb” with an illbalanced spiritual ecology. We must keep a good watch on our spiritual homeland if we are to maintain a harmonious unity between man and nature, man and society, man and himself in face of the great impacts of the modernist movement.
