Abstract: Ethnic minority villages, due to their unique geographical and cultural characteristics, have nurtured rich traditional social capital, which has had a profound impact on their ecological governance. This study analyzes a typical case of mountain closure in H Yi Village, Yunnan, and proposes an analytical framework to explore the process of embedding traditional social capital in ecological governance across four dimensions: structure, cognition, culture and politics. This embedding mechanism has facilitated the formation of multiple governance actors, the achievement of collective action, the inheritance of ecological protection concepts, and the optimization of power structures. To strengthen ecological governance, ethnic minority villages should actively utilize their traditional social capital by promoting rural elite participation, leveraging traditional trust and reciprocity mechanisms to enhance collective action capabilities, restoring and inheriting sustainable traditional knowledge and customs, and establishing a “threeintegration”supervision and incentive mechanism, thereby preserving cultural heritage and promoting ecological balance and sustainable development.
