Abstract: Jyuusannya is one of the masterpieces of Higutiitiyou, a famous Japanese woman writer in Meiji times. The images and space construction in this novel were analyzed from the perspective of narratology. The images of “moon”, “lattice door” and “road” create a kind of space between reality and illusion. The protagonist Oseki also transforms herself from illusion to reality, compromising herself completely to the reality. Through stereoscopic space construction and shifts of narrative perspective, Higutiitiyou vividly expresses her sympathy for the situation of the lower people. In this sense, the images and space construction themselves have some social and cultural significance.
