On Popularity of “the Belt and Road” and Its Validity Effect on Backtranslation

Abstract: The English translation of Chinese expression “yi dai yi lu” has always been a hot topic. Its multiple English versions have led to the validity of its better translation. This paper discusses the validity of English translation of Chinese “yi dai yi lu” in relation to the linguistic popularity and the validity effect of backtranslation. The linguistic popularity can reflect the acceptability of translation, and the testing effect on the reversibility of backtranslation can be reversely testified. “The Belt and Road” is argued as the most suitable English translation through the analysis of the popularity from the linguistic structures of prosody, grammar, wordbuilding and the validity of backtranslation.

摘要: “一带一路”的英文翻译一直是一个热议的话题,其英文表达法的多样性引发了译语的有效度讨论。从语言的流通性和译文对回译的检验效应来讨论“一带一路”英文翻译的有效性。语言的流通性可以体现翻译的可接受度和普及度,而译文对回译的回归度和可逆性反过来可以检验译文的有效性。讨论语音、语法、词汇等语言结构特征的流通性及回译检验效应,并论证“the Belt and Road”(B&R)是最合适的英文翻译。
