Abstract: Under the patriarchal societies and cultures, the image of females was often determined by the male gaze and portrayed regarding males preferences. Miguel de Cervantes, writer in Golden Age Spain, demonstrates his equitable and nonsexist attitude towards female through the young shepherdess, Marcela, in Don Quijote. This paper discusses how the female character Marcela fights against the male gaze through challenging male discourse and male authority and builds female subjectivity.
