玛里琳·鲁宾逊《基列家书》中 的身体与历史记忆

The Body and Historical Memory in Marilynne Robinsons Gilead

摘要: 玛里琳·鲁宾逊的小说《基列家书》中,激进废奴主义战士约翰·埃姆斯神父是亲历中西部废奴运动历史的“记忆人”,象征肉身化的历史记忆。战后重建时期,“记忆的社会框架”嬗变,他以个体记忆抵抗集体历史遗忘,身体沦为“记忆的政治”场域。他的癫狂隐喻个体记忆对抗集体遗忘的失败,表征被暴力扭曲、压抑并掩埋的历史记忆。通过再现埃姆斯的身体在社会语境更迭中的遭遇,鲁宾逊反思记忆的政治如何左右美国社会对废奴历史的记忆与遗忘,暗示历史遗忘是一种社会症候。面对历史遗忘,文学可能成为历史记忆的某种增补。

Abstract: In Marilynne Robinsons Gilead, the radical abolitionist, minister John Ames is the “memoryindividual”, the embodied historical memory, who participates in the abolitionist movement in the Midwest. During the reconstruction era, the “social frameworks of memory” change. As he attempts to fight against collective historical amnesia, his body is subjected to the “politics of memory”. Personal memory is disciplined by the will of collective amnesia. His madness, an embodiment of violently distorted, suppressed and buried historical memory, is a metaphor of failure of individual remembrance against collective amnesia. Through the representation of Amess body in changing social contexts, Marilynne Robinson reflects on how the politics of memory impacts the remembrance and forgetting of abolitionist history, indicating that in the face of historical amnesia which is a social symptom, literature serves as a possible supplement of historical memory.
