Manifestation of Translators Determinations in the Period of Cultural Havoc

摘要: 学界对外来译者沙博理在华翻译生涯大致区分了三个阶段,即新中国成立十七年、“文革”十年、新时期二十六年。这一时间上的区分使得学界对沙博理的研究更具像化。从译者对源语文本的选择、翻译策略的取舍、自我身份构建出发,以沙博理翻译生涯第二个阶段为个案研究对象,厘清特殊时期国家强权意识形态下译者意志的彰显,从而为“文革”时期外来译者在华翻译活动的研究提供参考。研究沙博理“一人三体”的翻译模式,能够对现阶段中国文化“走出去”起到借鉴与启示作用。

Abstract: Researchers of translation studies have divided Sidney Shapiros translation career into three periods: the first 17 years of the founding of New China, the period of cultural revolution, and the new era of the next twentysix years. This kind of temporal dividing makes the researches to Sidney Shapiro become more concrete. This paper chooses three perspectives, including the translators choice of the original language version and the translation strategies,the construction of selfidentity during the processes of translation, aimsto provide a case study with Sidney Shapiros second stage of translation career in China, and finds out the manifested evidences of translators determinations under the national power ideology in the period of cultural revolution, tries to provide a referential case study to the research of foreign translators translation activities in that period of China.Also, this paper tries to play a referential and heuristic role in “outward introduction” to Chinese culture based on the researches to the unique translation pattern of Sidney Shapiro.
